Solar Cell and Fuel Cell technologies are two of the most promising and significant technologies of our time. The Thames and Kosmos Fuel Cell 10 Car and Experiment Kit demonstrates both of these technologies with a newly designed car body and rewritten manual. Based on the award winning Thames and Kosmos Original Fuel Cell Kit, this 10th Anniversary Edition is better than ever! Perform more than 12 experiments and demonstrations to learn about hydrogen fuel cell technology, solar cells, electrolysis, and how to use the included multimeter.
Learn how water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis using a solar cell for power. Plug the motor into the Reversible Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell as it converts the collected hydrogen into electricity. Watch as the car runs on the included rolling display stand or scoots across your floor. Observe that only pure water is exhausted when using the fuel cell. When used with solar cells, fuel cells like his one don’t consume fossil fuels, don’t exhaust greenhouse gases and are considered to be environmentally friendly.
This science kit presents a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your child while performing the playful experiments contained in the 64 pages of the full color manual.
• build a car that runs on a battery pack, a solar cell panel, or a hydrogen fuel cell
• read about how solar cells are made and see how solar cells turn sunlight into electricity
• use the unique reversible Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell to produce electricity
• learn how to use the included multimeter
• great science kit for classrooms, science fairs, parent/child quality time, home school
A few warnings and notes from the box:
WARNING – This set contains chemicals that may be harmful if misused. Read cautions on individual containers carefully. Not to be used by children except under adult supervision.
Caution! – Not to be used by children except under the supervision of adults who have familiarized themselves with the experiments and safety precautions in the experiment manual. Only for children 10 years of age or older. Components in this kit may be sharp or breakable. Handle with caution.
Caution! – Battery-operated device – Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries.
Requires two AA batteries (not included)
Caution! – Inside the fuel cell, small amounts of flammable gases are produced. Before you start the the experiments, read the manual. Follow all instructions. Keep the manual ready for reference.
Additional Items Needed:
You will need one liter (about 1 quart) of distilled water. You must use distilled water. Tap water, filtered water, deionized water, and spring water will damage the fuel cell. Distilled water can be purchased at supermarkets and pharmacies.
To use the car indoors without natural sunlight, you will need a desk lamp with a 75-Watt (or higher) incandescent light bulb to power the solar panel.
